Cant network computers

Ok here is what I got. 2 computers hooked into a netgear wgr614/v4 with the latest firmware update. Now my problem isnt in the internet its the computers. I cant seem to get them to talk. I have enabled file sharing. Disabled the windows firewall. Gone through the setup wizard. Renewed ip's. Restarted both computers. Changed workgroups and I have changed the computer names.

Even tho I cant network the computers I can remote desktop it using the ip the router gave it. I am completely confused. One thing I find kind of odd tho is that when I go to the workgroup folder I see my computer. On the other computer itself doesnt show up in the folder. Any ideas to set this up?

start -> run -> \\IP_of_other_machine

If that doesn't work, you can try the above with the path to a network share (\\ip_of_other_machine\share_name).

No error? 😕

Xp pro sp2, Ok the error I got when trying nocmonkeys methods was the same old "this connection cannot be found". I started thinking if this may be a problem with the router itself. Well I have ruled that out by hooking up my switch and assigning ip addresses. We were networked but I could still do the remote desktop. So since there were no changes between the router/switch I just hooked everything back into the router.

you say that when you view the workgroup on your computer it shows only your computer and when you view the workgroup on the other computer it doesn't show either?

It sounds like the other computer is the problem. Are you manually assigning ip addresses or are they assigned by the router? If they are assigned manually, are they on the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0, etc)? Do you have another lan card you can try in the other computer?

Figured it out. My brother unchecked the box's for the fiel sharing clients. Checked them and now I am good to go.
