Can't log into windows xp

My friend is currently having a problem with his computer logging into windows; described below-

SephirCloud: when i log into my computer, it flashes the desktop for a moment before logging out onto the account selection screen. Whenever I try to select my account and login, it immediately automatically logs off.
SephirCloud: I've tried doing "last good configuration," and entering through safe mode, but neither have worked
SephirCloud: oh, on a side note, this is all in windows XP

Yeah i'm clueless to solve this one.

His profile might be corrupted.

Does he have anyone else setup to be able to log in or log in as a Guest cause if it is a profile issue it won't effect those profiles.

If that's not an option well....

This is usually where the dreaded "ReImage" word comes in.

Assuming your friend made an image.

you could re-install xp on top of itself, boot to the xp cd, and make like a normal install, but watch the prompts at the 2nd option you can hit r to restore windows (the 1st option r is for repair console)

you could try the repair console first, get into it, log into the admin account, at the prompt key in these sequences...and let each command do it's thing, might save you from the restore (works about 80% or the time for flakey boot problems with the OS)

fixboot

fixmbr

chkdsk /r
