Can't load Win98se

My Father is having a problem with his system. He has an Epox MVP3G2 and is running Win98se. The system posts, however as it starts to load Windows it stops and issues an always changing reason for stopping.
Ex: While initialzing device 'vtd:'
Windows protection error. You must restart your computer.

The part 'vtd:' is the reason that changes each time to something new like 'ios', 'vdmad', etc.
This occurs in Safe Mode attempts as well. All other cards have been removed except the video card in an agp slot.
Any ideas??

It's been working. He just changed the motherboard though. We've tried another old harddrive we had lying from another system with Win98 and it's doing the same thing. I know this makes it lean towards the MB, but we are new at adjusting the bios. Everything seems fine until Windows starts to load, and since the reason it doesn't work is different every time we reboot, we're stumped. Thanks for reading this!!

win98 might be choking on the new MB hardware. You might try a repair install. Before changing MBs it's a good idea to first remove all hardware in device manager.

I would try setting the bios to default values and turning off the internal and external caches. Then try booting into safe mode. When I switched my mobo, W98 had severe problems with the MVP3 chipset at first. Once I got it into safe mode, I loaded the VIA 4in1 drivers and set the video then re-booted. If that doesn't work, try putting the old mobo back in (if you still have it) and removing all of the hardware in device manager then switch mobo's. Hope it helps.

Also, I would try using a PCI video card and removing the AGP video card and turning it off in the bios. Once you get it booted and the right chipset drivers installed you can go back to the AGP.
