Can't install Windows on laptop

My cousin came over to have me fix her laptop. The problem was that it would not boot into Windows at all, not even in safe mode. Since she had nothing important on it, rather than messing around with it, I decided I'd just reformat and reinstall Windows. I though it was going to be easy and work fine, but I was wrong...

I've tried reinstalling Windows multiple times right now and every attempt has been unseccesful. At first I'd get to the point where the installation would start copying files to the hard drive, and it would constantly give me errors that many files could not be copied. Well, I first suspected that the media was the culprit. So I pulled the CD out and noticed it was actually very scratched. So I just downloaded XP and burnt it (keep in mind, I do have a valid key) and still the same problem. So media is ruled out.

What has started happening recently though is that when giving errors that files cannot be copied I get a BSOD that says "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT." I'm beginning to think its a bad hard drive, but I'm not really sure.

Any ideas as to what is wrong and/or how to pinpoint what is wrong? BTW, the laptop is a Gateway M520.

Sounds like the HD to me too. If you can determine the make of the HD, you should be able to download a diagnostic utility from the HD manufacturer.

That should tell you for sure, or nearly so.

If it has a floppy drive you can put the utility on it and boot from it. If not, a lot of them have the utility that can be burnt to a CD to boot from.

Could be the HD or the optical drive. To check the HD, go download The Ultimate Bootdisk. It has all the HD diagnostics you can think of.
