Can't install Win on my new computer with AbitKA7

Hi!

I've just put my brand new computer together but I cant get it to eat my Windows 🙁

The first problem i met was that I wasn't able to have my memory in Slot 1 as descibed in the manual. The computer newer boot up but beeps one time for "DRAM refresh is not working". When I put my memory in Slot 4 the mashine boots up nicely.

Next problem is when I try to install Win. Everything work just fine until after the first reboot. Now system hangs. Everytime I try to install the computer gets to diferent points before it halts. One time I get to the point where to write the Win product ID. Sometimes I got a bluescreen about VXD-problems and sometimes it just reboots.

I have nothing connected to the Abit KA7 KX133 exept:
Athlon 700
Matrox G400 DH
128Mb PC-133 VSSBURST memory
30Gb IBM Deskstar 75GXP
Sony Floppy
Sony 32x CD-ROM
All housed in a AOpen HQ08

Is it a memory or maybe mainboard problem?

Power Supply?

If the manual states the memory HAS to be in the first slot then you need to make that happen.
Can't move or raise the heatsink slightly?

The manual say abot the memories: "Those modules should be populated in DIMM1 to DIMM4 by orders."

The power supply is 300W and should be ok for Athlon.

The temp of the processor is about 30C (86F), so it shouldn't be a problem with an overheated processor...

The symptoms you describe could be the result of a bad memory module.
The Athlon(Classic) has been known to be extremly senitive to RAM.

You should try some other good PC133 RAM.

Second option: change the cable from HD and/or CD Drive. It seems like an error that occurs while data is being written/read from/to the drive.

try and report back. This way we all learn....🙂

I've ordered one of my friends to get over this weekend and bring some fresh memory and another video adapter.

I guess my memory is't the best quality 🙁

I'll try to change cable and report back!

Sorry for late reply, but I've been in Turky for vacation, far away for troubles with computers! 😀

My friend brought new memory and graphic adapter and we tried it out... He's memory worked fine in slot 1 on my motherboard :Q (and my memory didn't work with his computer 🙁).

Conclusion; A broken memory! But strange it worked some in slot 4, isn't it?

Thanks for all help! 🙂
