Can't install Spamfighter or download MS updates

OK-this is a problem I had at the beginning of the month:

1. Trying to install Spamfighter, but get a Win Installer dialogue box saying the folder can't be opened.

2. Trying to d/l MS Updates, and get the bar saying the site wants to download the following add-on: "Win Update". When I click on it to install, I get the notice that my security settings won't allow me to install Active X (Scty settings are at Medium).

I am pretty sure this is a Cryptographic error, and I have registered all the DLL files IAW MS solution for this problem. That worked the first of the month, but won't work now. Any ideas? Thanks.

1) what version of Windows?

2) where exactly are you downloading this program from? Maybe it's been trojanized.

3) have you scanned your system for viruses?

Sorry I omitted the OS- it's XP Home, sp2, with all updates. With that said, problem seems to be fixed. About 3 months or so ago, for some unknown reason, I installed IE7. I don't know why, since I only use IE for updates. This morning I was downloading the update for Grisoft's A Squared, and it wouldn't install. I figured that was also an ActiveX problem and since the security settings weren't the problem, I reverted IE7 back to IE6. And that was all it took- everything is now working: Got into MS Updates, Spamfighter program installed, and A Squared installed it's updates. Now if I could just remember to let well enough alone, LOL.

About 3 months or so ago, for some unknown reason, I installed IE7. I don't know why, since I only use IE for updates.

Maybe your subconcious wanted your computer to be as secure as practical, by having the more secure version of IE installed. Even though you don't use it, doesn't mean it can't be used. Maybe set a System Restore point and then give IE7 another try?
