can't install nvidia drivers

my wifes pc dies the other night, kept getting a blue screen.
SO I reinstalled XP pro on her pc (an alienware she bought before me)

I am trying to install the motherboard drivers and I keep getting an error that there are "Previous nvidia windows software installed" and they must be removed first. I have uninstalled anything nvidia related but I still get this error.

any ideas? I'm really stumped on this.

didn't work 🙁

rebooted into safe mode.
cleaned all nvidia stuff and nforce drivers.
reboot
try to install
exact same error message

You formatted? Should be no drivers installed at that point.
Everything about computers is about being on a path and staying on that path. 95% of all problems are resolved by getting back onto the path.
Are you sure you are installing correct (latest from website) drivers?

yes correct drivers.

I finally got things working by do all the windows updates including SP3.
once I rebooted, more hardware was detected and automatically installed.

and I still can't install the latest drivers but at least everything is working 🙂
