As the title states, I can't seem to get my modem to install correctly. Every time to try to install it, it always puts it in com port 5 instead of com1. Shouldn't it go to com1 since it isn't being used? How do I determine what com port it innitialy uses? Thanks a lot.

Don't worry about it, let it do it's own thing. That actually should be the behavior if it's a newer PNP or winmodem. COM1 and COM2 may already exist on the motherboard (unless not enabled), so the modem makes up it's own com port (sorta).

FYI: COM1 and COM3 share IRQ 4, while 2 and 4 are on IRQ 3 (odd for evens, so weird). Some things don't like COM's on shared IRQ's, so just be glad it's doing it's own thing.

Also, if you've had lots of COM/hardware (motherboard) changes, the COM numbers will get whacky. I was having driver problems with a serial port card and spent a weekend installing/uninstalling. I ended up with it as COM9 and COM10, on a four port system.

Hm, well, also, on my computer, different one, I have a Conexant modem installed, but it has 2 of them, one is in com3 and other is in com4. I tried removing one a while back, it screwed up everthing, it was hard enough to get it working again. I don't see why I have to have 2 modems installed to have it working correctly. Then, I tred removing both, them reinstall and it put them both there again. Ok, back to the first post, so which com port the modem is installed into has no affect whatsoever on it working correctly or not, because as it is, it won't dial, and when I try to do a diagnostic test with it, it can't seem to go through? Thanks for the help

Re post 1..

Sometimes there is a jumper on the modem board to allow you to set com ports or irqs etc. Of course it could be something to do with the IRQ steering of Millenium or Win2K.

When you go to Control Panel... Modem properties..Diagnostics tab..More info button what happens??

If it says "port already open" it probally means you have a conflict. Ie, the modem is sharing an IRQ. To correct this you might need to change the jumper on the card if there is one.. Other wise you might need to do something with the device the modem is conflicting with.

Another option would be to use the Bios to force the slot with the modem in, to a certain IRQ. I had to do this with mine!!

Hope this helps
