Can't install from CDROM drive, can from writer

On a friend's system w/ an ECS K7S5A, WinXP, Toshiba 32X CDROM as D:, and Plextor 16X CDRW as E:, we've tried to install two different games from the CDROM but get two different errors right at the beginning of install. They install fine from the CDRW drive.
We've installed from the CDROM in the past with no problem.
Don't think this has anything to do w/ it, but at one time we noticed the drives had swapped letters but I swapped them not too long after.
FSB is running at 138.

Which ever one is the master is the one install defaults to. I would get an external USB2 case for the writer and get it out of the machine. It will work better and you will solve the default problem at the same time.

Check your drive letters again to see if theyre right.
The master should be the first and the secondary the second.
Sometimes when you change drive letters from master to secondary it dosen't work.
Check your jumper pins and see if they correspond to your drive letters.
I had it happen to me in XP when I had the secondary drive set as a Master and changed the drive letters, I then changed the jumper pins and and drive letters to correspond to the right settings.

Or it just could be going bad. 32X means its what, more than a year old or so? Depending on how much use it's had it could be giving you indications of giving up the ghost. My D2 cd killed my DVD drive in 6 months just from constant use.

Finally got to check. Yes, the D: CDROM is the slave, and the E: CDRW is the master. I think this is the way I've always done it though, since it's recommended to put the writer as a master, and I always like my CDROM letter before the writer (doesnt everone). ? And the cables aren't long enough to put one on the primary w/ the HDD, since the HDD needs to be at the end of the cable, at least w/ the cases I've used.

Should I swap master/slave settings anyway?
