I installed windows xp sp2 from a slipstreamed cd I made. I tried installing a couple of games (sims2 and need for speed 2), and in both I had the same problem, I couldn't get it to install directx 9.0c (sp2 installs 9.0b).
I tried many things, including d/l 9.0c and installing it my self to no avail. I also tried an extreme solution of removing directx 9.0b through the registry, and then I tried reinstalling, but that didn't work, and now my system has no directx at all...
Is there a solution for that, or do I need to reinstall, and send my greetings to Bill Gates for the wonderfull sp2?

I thought SP2 comes with 9.0c?

yes it does. :)

Ok, thanks for clarifying. Perhaps, narcotic, your slipstream didn't go as planned? Maybe something was corrupt in the process?

no, but I did slipstream a fairly old release of sp2 (I think almost as soon as it came out), so that might be the issue.

A service pack is the same always, unless you got a beta of a sort. You can download the SP2 the day it came out or in 3 years, it's going to be the same.

if you ever want to know what vers of dirx you have just:
go to Start, Run and enter Dxdiag

DirectX Version............Version Number................Operating System

DirectX 1.0 4.02.0095

DirectX 2.0 / 2.0a 4.03.00.1096 Windows 95 OSR2 and NT 4.0

DirectX 3.0 / 3.0a 4.04.0068 / 69 Windows NT 4.0 SP3

DirectX 4.0 Never Launched

DirectX 5.0 4.05.00.0155

DirectX 5.0 4.05.01.1721 / 1998 Windows 98

DirectX 6.0 4.06.02.0436 Windows 98 SE and ME

DirectX 7.0 4.07.00.0700 Windows 2000

DirectX 7.0a 4.07.00.0716

DirectX 8.0 4.08.00.0400

DirectX 8.1 4.08.01.0810/0881 Windows XP and 2003 Server

DirectX 9.0 4.09.0000.0900

DirectX 9.0a 4.09.0000.0901

DirectX 9.0b 4.09.0000.0902

DirectX 9.0c 4.09.0000.0904

uninstalling dirx by the registry is a baaaaad idea.
I dimly recall that you can go to add remove software and microsoft items and click remove dirX and it will give option to go back - 8.1
I think you have to set registry item to show hidden objects in add remove

DXBuster may get it all - if it can find anything to recognize
