Can't install ati control panel for 9600 pro?

Having a lot of trouble installing my 9600 Pro on a P4P800 board. The manual says that 9500, 9700 with ending part less than 30 might give trouble. Mine is less than that so maybe that's the problem. Computer locked up when installing the drivers, with a checkdisk showing corrupted files, so I managed to install the drivers with the hardware wizard searching for the "inf" file. Card is installed and running fine, but now...

Everytime I try to install the control panel it does the same thing - locks up.

I have tried lowering the RAM timings to default (p4 at 133, auto spd, upped DRAM voltage to 2.75v, agp voltage to 1.6). None of that mattered when I tried installing the drivers. Only thing that worked was installing via the "inf" method.

Card seems fine - installed rad overclocker - running at 450/350 - scores about 12500 in 3dmark2001se - games seem fine - image quality great.

Any ideas as to how I can get the control panel installed?

The only thing I haven't tried is pulling a DIMM to put it back in single channel mode.

Any help would be appreciated. Would kind of like to be able to access the card settings for quality adjustment, etc.

PS.
Using catalyst 3.1, and the control panel I've tried to install displays 3.1.

i would try to get the newest catalyst driver if you can, which is 3.7. that might solve your problem for you

corresponding new release of catalyst drivers need to be installed prior to the control panel drivers....You may be trying to install newer control panel over old Cat's...

Ok - thanks for the support. I did verify that the control panel was for 3.1, which is what I had installed. I ran this card fine in my previous board (P4S533), but I've also had a TI4200 in this rig, so maybe that's part of it (used rip detonator remover, though).

I'll check out the link and maybe try again tomorrow. Currently, I have my ti4200 in - can't decide which is better. Both are good.

This is cool! I have been using Driver Cleaner, I didn't know they had a new version. This one includes a cab cleaner which will be sssoooooo nice ;)

Yep it`s in "tools" part of Driver Cleaner 2 ,anybody with 2K/XP and service packs should run driver cab and service pack cab cleaner in safe mode then after run driver cleaner, you won`t need to run the cab cleaners again after, only really needed to be done just the once.

Thank you for the excellent suggestions. Unfortunately, none of them would allow me to install the drivers/control panel the normal way. I was able to install the 3.7 drivers by hand (specifying location and inf file). To get around the control panel issue, I installed rage3d tweak, which gives access to all the settings I need, plus the oc ability. Card is rock solid at 450/350 and scores 12614 in 3dmark2001se.

As I indicated earlier, I also have the ti4200, and I really can't tell much difference in the cards. Both are great, but the recently revealed half life 2 nvidia performance issues made me somewhat nervous about nvidia. The 9600 did quite well, and if these intial test are indicative of coming dx9 games, I wanted to get my 9600 pro installed and working, since the ti4200 doesn't have dx9 hardware support.

Thanks again. It's great to have a resource like this for support and sharing of information.

dajo, did you download the complete one package of CATs 3.7 (it will install Control panel automatically,it`s about 22mb download size) or the seperate driver and control panel download?

Yes! I tried that. I also tried the Omega Drivers and 3.1 drivers. Box freezes when I try to install any of these apps, but, as I stated, I have the card installed with the "browse to inf" method and everything works fine. I also have the rage 3d utility installed, which gives me access to the various settings, so I am satisfied.

I've been working on this for two days, and, short of re-formatting my hd (which I'm not going to do because I don't think it will matter), none of the "exe" methods would work.

I believe that there is a slight incompatibility issue between my motherboard and this card. The manual specifically states that 9500s and 9700s with ending PN not equal to "30" or above might exhibit instability issues - this is a 9600 with PN ending less than "30", so, close enough to raise concerns. During one post I saw artifacts in the form of multi-coloring in the letters which were also flashing. Since then, I have upped the AGP voltage to 1.6 and increased my aperture to 128MB. Have not seen anything of that kind since.

So, I am satisifed for now, as the card is solid. OS recognizes it as a 9600 pro, have looped 3dmark2001se demo for about an hour with no problems, loaded jedi knight 2 and spawned about 30 lukes and 15 desanns and watched them fight it out - 1024x768, vid options at highest settings. Those of you who have this game and have done this will, no doubt, realize how heavily this draws upon video resources. Action is fluid and image is great, so I consider this post pretty much finished for now.

I don't really care about the sys tray or ATI applet stuff as long as I can adjust the other options via the registry interface that the rage 3d program supports. I don't have multiple monitors or anything like that.

Actually, I usually just run everything at default, or application preference. It just bothered me that I didn't at least have access to those methods.

There may be other things to investigate in solving these issues, but I don't really want to make this issue my life's work. I'm sure I'll be buying another card in the next six months, so having the card installed and working great is good enough for me.

Thanks again!
