Can't get work done on my browsers... Symantec is killing me

I have Norton Systemworks 2006 on my pc and now I can't use all the features on firefox or iexplorer 7. I tried disabling the firewall, autoprotect, spyware protection but it doesn't help.

I'm at newegg and the "customer reviews", "specifications", sort panels on the left either aren't there or they don't respond.

Uninstall Norton Systemworks and go with different security programs. I think I speak for majority of posters here when I say that Norton products typically aren't worth the CDs they come on. It may or may not be the cause of your problem though - what makes you think Norton is doing it?

I no longer believe it's Norton, as I uninstalled NSW and the problem still lingers. Unless, it's some residual files, I don't know what the problem is. I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled and the same problem exists. Now it just seems to be a firefox problem.

Have you checked the processes list? Take a look what uses most of the CPU or Memory..

Run the typical malware removal scans. There's lots of threads in here with links if you don't know of any offhand.

I've always been slow to defend the 05-06 consumer products, they had problems, they were slow, they were hard to uninstall. I can't go into all of it, but lets just say a group of us replaced the consumer management team. I was very proud of the work done an the 07 consumer products, the 08 ones are even better. All of the teams metrics are around performance and size. I'll put these versions up against the 'usual suspects' any day, and we are generally better.

When I couldn't say that, I didn't. But now that I can and honestly believe it, I do.

Unfortunately, those years were when the consumer security focus hit its peak, and you couldn't have possibly asked for a worse time for a leading product suck. It really was a make-or-break time, and Symantec missed the geek boat. Unfortunately, they still made the cheapo consumer boat. Besides, with so many free alternatives out there, EVEN IF the product has had its Anti-Suck component upgraded, I don't see how a subscription-based product is viable. Last I checked though, it's still very resource intensive as well, but then again, I haven't exactly given it a fair try since its name was tarnished.

I always avoided installing Norton Security on my computer some years ago because it dragged my unit causing it to slow down tremendously. Now are different times where disk space increased greatly and CPU's getting a lot faster.

I just decided to install Norton Internet Security that comes along with the utilities on the CD of the motherboard I purchased a few months ago, and I can honestly say that it didn't affect much on the performance of my pc. In fact, I am fairly content with it that I am doing away with the usual stuffs that I used to depend before.

I went searching for a tread like this one because I just ran into a frustrating problem with IE7 after installing NIS 2007 (just as my NIS 2006 subscription was expiring). The problem was that IE7 in all other XP PRO user accounts (regardless of their rights!) generated script errors on many sites (e.g. hotmail) and/or did not display everything on those sites (e.g. Dell).

Despite the fact that the problem started at exactly the same time that I installed NIS 2007, the Symantec techs gave me the same story: "if you've turned everything off an you still have the problem, then it's not our software".

There an MSDN thread here that describes the IE7 scripting errors that some people are having and the fixes they are trying. You'll see that a number of people started having these problems after installing Norton.

It seems that there is some sort of compatibility problem between IE7 and Norton. I had to finally uninstall IE7; all the user accounts are again working correctly now that we're back on IE6. I tried reinstalling IE7, but the problem immediately returned. I have no explanation for the fact that I had been running IE7 with NIS 2006 without any problems all this year.

The bottom line seems to be this: if you experience any kind of IE7 browser problem, you may have stumbled into this compatability with Norton. If you want to keep Norton, you may need to uninstall IE7 and live with IE6 (I already miss the tab feature) or pick up Firefox or Opera.
