can't get wirefless to work

I have an older notebook running Windows 2000 that did not come with a wireless card, so I bought this external card for it.

I am able to connect to wireless networks, and the icon in the taskbar suggests that the PC is connected with excellent strength, but I can not access the internet at all.

If I connect to the router through ethernet, the internet works fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

If the wireless network you are attempting to connect to is utilizing encryption, you will need to configure your card to utilize the same, including the SSID and any encryption key.

good luck

I have almost the same problem. W2k and wireless.

I've setup the wep key and SSID on the admin account which works just fine. But when I try using any other account, there's no internet. Network connections shows that packets are being sent but none received. "link is connected, but no or limited connectivity." Failed to connect browser windows suggestions say that it cant find the DNS. And directly plugging into the router works fine too.

Hi Hoopster,

See if you can set up the wireless as the default connection or through LAN.
Go to Internet Explorerer - tools - connection -
First try ticking the box that says connect through LAN - go to advanced page and tick the box that asks if it should find settings automatically.

Try that.

Gorobei,
You might have to try a similar thing in the user account -

Thanks for the replies.

If the wireless network you are attempting to connect to is utilizing encryption, you will need to configure your card to utilize the same, including the SSID and any encryption key.

I have the card set for WEP and 128 bit encryption, which is correct.

Good idea but no dice.

Also, I should add that I have a newer notebook that is wokring fine off the wireless, so it is just this notebook that isn't working.

I saw this same problem with 2 laptops.

The older (3 year old) laptop just would not accept wifi - tried 2 different usb wifi gadgets - no luck at all.
Both were running XP.

Anyway, they settled on running the older laptop with a cable - just thought I would share that nugget with you.

Can you check what services are running/disabled/manual?

I am taking that the card is working nicly in the laptop, using the current drivers and such. I am a noob with windows 2000 & wireless, but thats due to technoloy.

1) Did you use the Easy Setup Program? - I noticed that it was on the website, that you provided.
2) Is it setup for WPA or WEP?
2a.) If set for wpa, copy and paste the code into the program ( if it will let you, i know linksys tool will), might it suggest going to WPA for wireless security.
2b.) Ensure that you have it setup for WPA-Personal, and have a good passphase.

Most of the time if it notices your card and not your connection its the security key provided.
If it doesnt notice your card in device manager and there is no power on the wireless card then chances are the pcima slot is dead.

Also, check firewall settings..

Let us know if you find a solution to your problem.

tried the "connect thru LAN" auto detect. No luck.

I was considering manually assigning the DNS and ports, just to see if it is some sort of "changes to hardware" permissions issue.
