hey guys, i have 3 PCs:

1. windows server 2003
2. windows server 2003
3. windows xp pro

i want to back up the files on PC #1 to another HD, so I hook up HD from PC #2 or PC #3 to it. its recognized in BIOS, and recognized in Device Manager, but doesnt show up as a drive in My Computer

similarly, i can stick HD #3 onto PC#2 and I'd get the same result.

They're all IDE HD in NTFS... they all work by themselves in their respective PCs... its just that when I hook up another HD to it i cant seem to see it

also I tried to backup files by burning it on CDRs... i stuck 2 CD-Rw drives on the Server 2k3 machines and they recognize the cd-rw drive but apparently does not support burning functions? is there a way to circumvent this? how can i back up 10gb of data

Please post in the correct forum.

Most likely incorrect jumper settings. In other words, you have a drive set as slave on the master connector on the cable, or vice versa.

If you've checked your jumpers and everything, try using Disk Manager to see if they're formatted and have drive letters assigned to them.

did you give them drive letters in the disk manager?

obviously all the connections are right or the bios and windows would not see them at all. you have to import them as well since they weren't originally from that computer

Run prompt -> type MMC and hit enter -> File -> add-remove snap in -> add -> disk management -> finish out

OR

Start -> Programs -> Admin Tools -> Computer Management (disk management is in there)

I don't know about Win2003. Works in 2k and XP.
