While it's going to sound completely stoopid, one theme I've noticed is that it's recommended by several knowledgeable people that you disable Legacy USB Support on i865/i875. Nothing to lose by trying it, right? 🙂 Also (super long shot here), do you have any of your case's front-USB wiring plugged into the motherboard?

Also, if you have the Intel Application Accelerator installed, you might try uninstalling it.

no application accelerator and no Case usb installed

my IDE cabel isnt long enough to switch the opticals the IDE 1

this is what i did:

IDE1:

master: dvd
slave HDD

ID 2:
master: cdrw
slave: nothing

with this configuration, everything works

am i asking for trouble by making the HDD slave? or by putting an optical and a hard disk on the same channel?

Someone did drive benches with the drive alone and with an optical drive as slave. No difference noticed. Don't know if having the HD as the slave would make a difference though I doubt it. Since now you can have two devices running at different speeds on the same channel. Before you didn't do it because the devices would have to all be the speed of the slowest device.

put the dvd as slave w/ hd as master..

i really cant, the HDD is seated below the DVD rom and i dont have enough length on the cable to plug the master on the hdd, pull the slave up to the DVD and back track back to the IDE controller on the mobo

can i set the dvd jumper to slave and leave the cables as is?

Yes, you can use the jumpers on the drives to set master/slave assignments. Position on cable only comes in to play when both drives are set to cable select.

gotcha, thanx

ok. i got everything working with the following config:

IDE 1:
master: HDD
slave: DVD

IDE 2:
master: CDRW
slave: nothing

that should be ok right?

did not know this

Hey, nobody mentioned this, but perhaps your drive is just a dud? Or maybe it's a p.o.s?

Did you try running the optical drives alone? If they work alone then the second question above still applies. Maybe they just don't play well together.

There's no reason why both optical drives can't on the same channel; I have both of mine on IDE2. I also always use the jumpers instead of using cable select.

Try updating your system BIOS and flashing the firmware on both drives to the latest version.
