Can't get the opteron 170 past 2.8ghz?

Set a divider....
Also, you'll be pretty damn lucky if you can get it to 2.8. That would probably take watercooling.

Not everyone will get 2.8 and like Seer said you will have to use a divider. There is no point in spending money on ram like that. You get very little improvement. If you want to spend the money get a low latency ram instead. Ram speed matters very little.

That crucial in the same review would be better. Its really good stuff but is it worth the price? Thats up to you...if your happy im happy.

Do you really believe that ram is worth more than a Opty 165. Hell get some good low latency ram and use the extra 100 or so on the video card.

Id also be very supprised if you got 2.8ghz. If you did though, that would be one great cpu.

The reviews of that RAM I bought have shown it goes stable up to 270-280 with Voltage that does not exceed 2.9V

Don't kid yourself, the RAM I bought is the best of the best.. I just want to know how to get past the RAMs bottleneck of 280 if I perhaps went for a wc setup

As long as your happy. I wouldnt reccomend that route for anyone reading this unless they just have money to burn. And the reviews I have read put it among the best but not nessessarly THE best.

But according to this- I wouldn't be able to get past 2.8ghz with this RAM.

Are there way to work around it? What else would I do to work around the 280X10 Multiplier limit..........

uh, how many people do you know of that past the 2.8ghz barrier on an opteron? 2.8ghz is an achievment in itself.

In hindsight it was kind of silly... But as long as it is excellent RAM then I am happy

I guess.... all I want to do is OC my Opteron to the limit... If this RAM can take me there and back, great!

I guess thats my biggest concern, that it will fail me in OCing

You need to really temper your expectations..not all optys wil lhit 2800...

also as you increase the overclock often the memory controller becomes a big issue and often you need to lower ram mhz to keep stabiltiy..not all optys memory controller will keep up 1:1 at 250mhz and above....

My impression is you have not overclocked before and see all these great results and expect it will be plug n play..sorry it will not and it can get very frustrating

I've got these and run my opty 146, 280x10 on the 183mhz divider so the ram will run 255mhz

I've been able to get the RAM up to 270fsb without problems, but I've seen good pairs go past 280FSB

I bought that stuff! (It was ?263, though :(.) I'm expecting it here next Tuesday (not coming Tuesday, the one after :p). All of my other stuff will arrive coming Tuesday. Be prepared for some diehard Opteron 165 CCBWE 0550 UPMW, all! :D

I think people are confusing this ram with the earlier 2-2-2 model which required high voltages to OC and required active cooling

The RAM we bought has been reported in reviews as stable up to 280FSB with a 1:1 ratio. and with low voltages and impressive timings, it beat out the OCZ PC4000 which is highly acclaimed. Again if one were to use a divider and had some impressive cooling I imagine you could push an Opteron 170 beyond 2.8! I admit though it is confusing because there are two versions of this RAM called exactly the same thing except with different timings- but the revision in timings is more than that and makes a HUGE difference

Robert, please research a bit on the speed thing. A bit of googling would've led you around...

Check out AngryGames' post @ DFI forums. He ran dozens of tests with different RAMs at different speeds, with different dividers.

The general results are:

Speed over timings (Unless it's 264 3-3-3-8 vs 265 3-4-4-8)
Dividers don't matter
2T is almost irrelevant (~3-5% performance drop at the most)

I think its safe to say you hit the wall/ceiling with that particular processor. A very nice accomplishment though. Congrats!

Jeez. People take overclocking for granted. If you get an Opteron, you're not guaranteed 2.8GHz! I've seen plenty of people get over excited about the possibilities and then become destroyed to find out their chip will only do 2.5.

I'd still be happy with 2.5 I mean, that's pretty damn good still

lol, i almost had a heart attack when my x2 3800 hit 2799. :X And yes 2.8ghz is extremely lucky, i concider my chip to be a lotto ticket, but concidering how much hell i went though to get it, the backorders, the excuses from the vendor saying the chip is lost in the warehouse, when it hit 2.8 it seriously made my day.

BTW my cpu is a toledo core, and no its not for sale,
and no i dont plan on upgrading to a opty.
