Can't get sound from speakers but headphones work just fine

I can't figure this one out...I'm thinking there's some hidden setting I'm missing, anyone have an idea what can I do?

btw my audio device (this is a laptop with an intel HD audio something) is correctly detected and sound is ok as long as I have the headphones plugged 😕
 
Have you tried reinstalling the audio drivers? Or rolling them back to a previous version?

I had a similar problem on my vista desktop, and I just reinstalled the drivers and that fixed the problem.

I was in the process of trying several sets of drivers when I tried installing them in compatibility mode just for the sake of it, and it worked, thanks for the inspiration.
