Can't get some video files to fast forward in WMP

Maybe you have experienced this too....

have you ever downloaded a video and bring it up in WMP and want to fast forward through it...by clicking on the seek bar...but no matter what you do it never fast fowards...


Is there a setting or something on the file is that just the way it was encoded and nothing you can do about it ?

sounds like it was encoded without keyframes...

get virtualdub (freeware), and before opening the file, look in the options of the open dialog box for something like 'rederive keyframes'....

then save....

sometimes it helps to load up the video in virtualdub. it'll ask if you want to reindex the video.
