Can't get SMBus controller to work (no driver?)

I need help and clarification ..... when looking at Device Manager under Windows XP, it states that my "SM Bus Controller" is not installed. I have tried everything to resolve this:

1) searched for drivers through right click - "Update driver" (couldn't locate any)

2) go through windows update website and scanned for updates (no luck)

3) went to motherboard website (Epox) - (again no luck)

4) went through Intel for the i845g chipset I have - tried Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility but had prob. with installation since XP has native support for chipset (worth a shot)

5) searched web and Microsoft website for info - no clear answers could be found.

With the SM Bus not working, does this significantly affect my system integrity? I have noticed through benchmarking w/ SiSoft Sandra that my SMBus is not enabled and that it is also affecting my AGP Bus and bandwidth (my card is not running at 4x agp).

Please ... if anyone out there had a similar prob. or know something of my situation, let me know of any suggestions ... any

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is my set up:

- Epox 4g4a+ mobo w/ i845g chipset (ICH4 SMBus controller) - using onboard AC97 (ALC650) sound card; (not using onboard HPT372 Raid array)

- P4 2.26 FSB 533
- 512mb 2700 ddr @333
- GeForce 3 Ti 500 w/ Det. 23.11
- Lite On 48x12x48 CD-RW; Aopen 12x DVD
- 40gb Maxtor 7200rpm/ata133; 15gb WD 7200rpm/ata133
- OS - Win XP Professional (installed all critical updates and drivers from Windows Update site)
Norton Antivirus 2002

Thanks in advance

It seems as though I remember that driver being installed by Intel Active Monitor, but I also have Application Accelerator. It shows it's installed with version 2.0 of the Intel drivers. I have an Intel D850MV board.

Does XP have native support for the SMBus controller since it does not need Intel Application Accelerator or Chipset Soft. Inst. Utility. installed for it to function ... supposedly??? By the way, I resinstalled XP twice and both times it could not detect my SMBus controller (shows as a question mark on my Device Manager). Thought it might be conflict or software issues. Also through SiSoft Sandra ... it shows SMBus Controller supposedly be using IRQ9 along with my modem (US Robotics), AC 97 on board sound, and MS ACPI-compliant system. Is having too much resources dependent on one IRQ the culprit???

Thanks
