Cant get simple sharing to work with xp/vista/win7

I have a server where I have all my big harddrives in. It has 4 shared folders, one for each drive.
However it is impossible to create access with sharing normally so I can do \\Servername and then just browse the folders, I get "Access Denied" when I try to access the folders.

Its currently running Win7 but ran Vista before that, however in vista I was able to get it to work with a username/password, but I do not want that. I just want the folders to be freely shared with admin access, I am not affraid of anyone coming on to my network anyway, its a closed loop.

I have enabled public sharing and disabled password protected sharing. And then all folders are shared. But still nothing is accessable except for the folder "Public" which I did not create, but is just standardly shared.

Anyone that can give me a quick guide on getting this simple thing to work?
 
The only way that I could get this to work was to literally add the user "Everyone" with all access (on the Vista PC) to the shared folder/drive. Worked fine after that (I don't remember where I found the above advise...somewhere on the net).

I'll check it when I get home. I don't think you need to create an account, just allow "Everyone" access in the shared folder section. I'll update later.

Edit:

Home now...right click on folder to share and select "Share".

Select the "Advanced Sharing" button.

Make sure the "Share this folder" button is checked and then click the Permissions button.

Click on the "Add" button and and type Everyone in the box and click OK. You should see "Everyone" listed in the "Group or user names: box. You can then modify the Permissions for "Everyone" such as "Full Control", "Change" or "Read".

Probably. That's probably why it works if you all "Everyone" to have permission to share your folders/drives.
 
I have Server 2008 running at home and all I did was create folder with sub folders for each discrete drive. I mount those drives to their respective subfolders and share the higher level folder. I created a user on the server with the same username and password as what I use on my workstations and gave that user access to the share. I am at work so am typing all this from memory but I will check it when I get home in case I missed anything.
 
In windows 7 there is an option to enable/disable 128 bit encryption, and something to do with compatibility mode with older windows versions. I'll post back when I boot win 7 agian
