cant get rid of symevnt.386 error

I know this is probably a simple solution cuz' i fixed it before now i cant. NOTHING in system.ini (win98se) Post stopes when it cant find symvent.386. Trying to clean up an old system to giveto friend.

try running msconfig (START->RUN->msconfig), see if there are any matching entries showing in system startup. sounds like file is associated with Symantec (Norton Anti-Virus?)
failing that, given that you are cleaning an old system to give to a friend, in those circumstances I'd be tempted to do a fresh, clean install rather than let them suffer with a system that's carrying a load of accumulated crud.

hth

tried msconfig too much stuff i dont understand to start deleting i tried disabling stuff but no help OKAY a reinstall it is i was just trying to keep some of the cool software that i have installed (spybot s&d,winamp w/ vis, themes, ect)

Yes, but think of the glow of satisfaction you will have when you hand over a system with a lovely fresh, clean setup. Not to mention the fun you'll have reinstalling all those applications.
