Can't get Quake III demos to run

I tried loading it on two different computers... but the demos (demo1 and demo2) don't run. If I go to the console and type /demo demo001 then it begins to load everything up and then goes to menu screen. If I select one of the demos from the demo menu... it just plain returns to the menu screen. Any ideas?
 
Demo 1 and 2 run only in Point release 1.17. If you are running 1.27h or any other then the demo's don't work. New demo's are released with a later point releases.
