Can't get processor off HSF

So I checked to make sure that the processor was a 478 pin, and it was, so I am trying to put it back in, but Gateway has pretty much used glue as Thermal Grease, and can't get the processor off of the HSF to put the processor back in the socket... any suggestions on how to?

If the CPU came off the mobo still attached to the HSF, chances are you may have bent some pins in the process. A way to try to prevent this from happening is to run the CPU at full load for a few minutes, allow it to heat up and then immediately take the HSF off.

You could try using some solvent to loosen things up, nail polish remover for example. Once you get it off, clean both CPU & HSF surfaces throughly and apply a fresh coat of Shin Etsu thermal compound - this does not cause the CPU & HSF to stick together like glue.

The processor came off with the HSF, I had done this to another computer before, by the processor came off a lot easier, and with the nail polish, do i just get a q-tip and rub it where some of the TG near the processor is??

I'd use a hair blowdryer and some gloves or vise to hold it. Heat it up and it should come apart pretty easily, might require a little persuasion with some finesse and a screw driver.

layman definition...don't break it stupid 🙂

well got her off using rbV5's method, heated it with bowdryer for about 2-3 min, pushed on it a bit with the screwdriver, now i gotta put on some new TG, and cross your fingers, hopefully i didnt screw it up so it will run just fine =D

You could have also thrown it in the freezer for a while, that is how we used to get hsf off of video cards.
