can't get out to the internet on new computer

I posted this in the motherboard area as well but I figured it's a network issue to.

I just recently built a new machine with the ASUS K8V SE Deluxe motherboard. It says the onboard NIC is installed and working properly. When I disconnect my LAN cable it tells me the cable has been unplugged and so forth, but it won't get out to the internet. When I try to do an ipconfig /release it won't release the 169.254.xxx.xxx ip that it defaults to. I've tried ASUS's website for info on this problem and came up empty. They had a couple similar issues with the same built in NIC on other boards but the solutions for those didn't work for this.

I'm posting this from my old computer which gets out fine. I use the exact same cable when I test my new computer for I don't have a hub or router and only one connection. So it's not the modem or cable or any other external networking component.

Someone please help.

Welcome to the Network Forum.

It might be very useful if you would describe the nature of your Internet Connection?
Could be that it is authenticate by MAC number.

Ignore the prices in the links above. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I went to RoadRunner's tech page for help. Apparently the Motorola cable modems are bound to the MAC address and hold it in some form of RAM inside. Powering it and the computer off and then hooking everything up and powering the cable modem on...then the PC on it will rebind the connection.
