can't get new memory stable

Hi, I recently purchased some new Patriot Extreme Performance Viper Series ram: http://www.patriotmem.com/prod...oupid=75&id=710&type=1

Its the rev. 2 with the 2.1v, and i can't get it stable at all. I got the memory to pass 24hrs of memtest @ stock settings of 5-5-5-15-2T 1066mhz, but it will crash in a couple minutes after i load up windows. I think it may be that my motherboard that may not be able to handle the high memory clocks, but im not sure, and i only have a couple days left to return the ram. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advnace.

NVIDIA 680i does not support PC 2 8500 RAM some folks have manually downclocked.. but I would Return for PC 2 6400.

Thanks for the reply Mr Fox, I've returned the ram and will stick with my kingston stuff for now.

Not sure how easy it'll be, but you can get DDR2-1066 speeds on 680i...not sure why Mr. Fox believes otherwise.

You may need to increase NB voltage, vdimm, loosen subtimings [tRFC especially], adjust ratios, etc, but you should be able to do it.
For higher speeds like that, tuning is nearly always required.

No one should be buying DDR2-1066 & assuming it'll "just work"...you generally need to change a setting or few.

I have an Abit IN9-32X MAX, a 680i chipset mobo, I have 4 sticks of 1GB Crucial Ballistix Tracers, running at 533MHz (1066MHz DDR) 5,5,5,15,2T while the FSB is at 333MHz (1333MHz Quad pumped) all this with DRAM Voltage of 2.0V, completely stable. Didn't even raise NB Voltage.

When mobos don't officially support certain speeds, doesn't mean it won't work. Do you think P35 mobos have official support to run 400MHz (1600MHz Quad pumped)?

Have you tried increasing NB voltage? The Patriot page explicitly said the sticks were tested under 680i chipset too.

Thanks for the reply. Well, I was actually trying to buy the mushkin hp-2's but they were sold out, and those patriots were next on the list for me, especially since it said it was pretested with 680i chipsets like you said, so i thought i was getting a set of guaranteed 1066mhz ram without needing to tweak it (I put in the suggested timings on the webpage / package it came with and the 2.1v).

I did increase the NB voltage to the max allowed in my bios of 1.5v (from 1.4v), and even bumped the fsb voltage to 1.4v (from 1.3v), and it still kept crashing on me in windows after a few minutes. The ram passed 24hrs of memtest 86+, which i think would mean there wasnt anything wrong with the ram. The guy at the return counter at the store when i returned the memory did however tell me that the 680i LT motherboards have trouble with 1066mhz ram.
