First make sure you have a 400W or more PSU with that NF4 board. My board had both the 4 pin molex power connection and a small square one also.. Both had to be connected..

It was my first build in a while, so I hadn't seen the two extra needed power connections before..

The Seasonic is more than enough power.

Are you saying the board needs an main ATX power connection, a smaller 12v square connector, AND a molex connector?

Yup.. Well, my DFI Lanparty UT SLI board needed that, and wouldn't POST without it - even though the manual said that it was only needed when running SLI..

I hope that's the problem here, that would be quite the easy fix then :)

I can see it in the Ultra board too

 for you in case you're right :)

The blinking LED and spinning fans could mean it's booting into green mode. You may need a hard drive jumper or some other short across the "G-BTN " two pin if the board has it to allow it to post otherwise it boots to green mode also known as "suspend to ram".

3. G-BTN (Green Button Switch):
Some ATX cases provide a Green button switch, which is used to put the system in
Suspend mode. While in Suspend mode, the power supply to the system is reduced
to a trickle, the CPU clock is stopped, and the CPU core is in its minimum power
state. The system is activated whenever the keyboard or mouse is touched. The
system will resume in various ways as defined by Power Management Setup screen
in BIOS.

Your board has the feature !!!

good to see you guys probably got it fixed, this forum is awesome...

ive been reading this site for about a year and a half now and its inspired me to do a lot of things to my comp, and pretty soon i have the money to build myself a monster of a gaming rig....anyway i wish i could have realtime video phone set up with you guys lol :))

*i used to be a serious comp n00b, and anything i would do would send my comp into some type of crash or what not...nothing i do with computers is ever easy(excpet oc'ing my vid card weird enough....even when i got a free installation kit for my cable when installing it the modem wouldnt cycle so instantly i thought the worse..old comp...bad ethernet card...eneded up a bad modem lmao, after 2 days of frantic tinkering.....come to think of it my first IBM aptiva(66mgz w00t w00t) had a defective 26k modem and i had the phone company come out and check the lines and what not....then before reinstalling a new one a accidently stepped on it and had to buy another replacement) lol sorry for typing so much....i recently registered because of IP probs, but its like ive been posting here for a while.....

anyways i heard the gigabyte board(nforcesli) doesnt need or have an extra molex connector......

GL clarkkent! i know how you feel!

It could be that the BIOS is set by default to use AGP instead of PCI. I would try and pick up a cheap AGP card or borrow one, and try to get the system to POST. Then, go into the BIOS and change it to use PCI.

Is your video card a pci or pci-e ? Because I've seen several post by ppl. that can't get a NF4 mobo to post w/ a pci video card.

Jose

Well, I don't know much about your video card, but there was some discussion that the Chaintech will not work with PCI video cards by themselves. You must first have a PCI-E video card in the PCI-E slot. Search the motherboards forum. I believe the OP was MajorPayne who made that comment. In fact, MajorPayne has had several very detailed, valuable threads regarding the Chaintech VNF4 Ultra and OCing that board. Might be worth your time.

To be honest, I didn't even know there were just regular PCI bus video cards. I thought they were all AGP or PCI-E.

Oh, theblazenee: you don't need more than 400W with this board. I'm running it fine with an Antec 350W PSU. It is not the W, it's the quality of the PSU, from what I've read.

Edit:

Here's the thread on the video card: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...&STARTPAGE=2&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear

Ok guys Im back. Decided to take the day off, after last nights frustrations, and see Sin City.

Anyways I did some tinkering and here is the verdict:

Good News - I got it to post. I installed my X800XL that Im saving for my new system into this one and it posted. Shows HD and correct cpu and memory speeds.

Bad News - Still can't get it to post with the PCI card. I looked through the BIOS and tried changing a few settings but nothing takes.

So this is where were at. I need to use a cheap card for this system because its only going to be used for web browsing and some typing. Nothing graphically intensive. I'd rather not shell out the money on a PCI-E card because the only thing cheap is the X300 and that is a piece of crap. Any ideas on how to fix this or suggestions on alternative cards?

You can probably get a really cheap PCI card in the FS/FT forums here if you just want any old thing.

After reading the master thread in the MB section I don't think its just my card. I think its all PCI cards. Frick!

Maybe still check FS/FT forums... I know a lot of people have been jumping on cheap refurb dell deals and know a lot of them have X300s that people are going to want to switch out.

example thread

You can probably find a cheapo X300 for $30 or $40 off ebay too.

Well it seems that Im going to have to RMA the board back to Newegg. Anyone know which board I should go with as a replacement? I was thinking about the A8N-e. I think the Ultra chipset is better, at least from what I've read, then the standard.

I think any NF4 mobo won't post w/ a pci video card. It won't matter what mobo you get.

Yes. I believe no one even remembers PCI video cards...

Seriously. I'm completely at a loss as to why you even built that machine. A Pentium 2 300 mhz can do that... and it actually still does for my mom.

That's a micro ATX board

Someone in the thread I have in Motherboards said he had his DFI board running with one.
