can't get my Lightscribe drive to Lightscribe :(

QueBert

i installed the drive in my PC, it's working for the basic crap, but I'm not seeing the Lightscribe options. I installed the Surething SE that came with it, but it has no Lightscribe setting. I thought some drivers might need to be installed, but I can't find anything on the CD that came with it, except for crappy video editing and some burning software. the manual that comes with the drive is a joke, I actually broke down and called HP tech support, they told me I had to install the whole CD that came with it, 600+ of garbage to get the stupid disc printing to work, no way.

I'm out of ideas, anyone with this drive?

Besides that, you need special media - won't work with standard media. Have fun with your fad.

figured it out, I know you need special media. But I doubt this is a fad, HP will include it in all future drives they make. Lacie, BenQ & Philips are all on board with drives coming out. And I've heard Pioneer & TDK will have drives out by summer. I'll admit the process is sloooooow. But, my first cd burner took 41 minutes to burn a cd, 1/2 the time it wouldn't even burn correctly. And every time I burned a disk I couldn't touch my PC or it would be a dead cd without question. I don't see the technology going anywhere but up, especially when they release drives that'll do color, and label a disc in under 10 minutes.
I paid exactly the same for the drive as the Lite-On next to it, so even if Lightscribe dies, I still have a decent 16x DL drive (which cost no more)

Lightscribe is pretty cool, and current generation hardware will see vast speed improvments when the new media comes out around August (up to 60% faster)

Why would this die? I see it becoming a very standard thing. If it were much more expensive than maybe. When people can get it for the same price, I'm on it now because I didn't put out any extra and it won't hurt me in the future. Great idea.

My lightscribe burns a label in about 25 min max. Does nice job for first gen hardware/software. Found plenty of lightscribe CDs but no DVDs yet. Other than by mail, any idea where some can be found? I've alreadychecked my local, CompUSA, Best Buy, Staples, OfficeMax, and Circuit City.

Best Buy is starting to carry them, not all stores yet though. I think all electronic stores will have them soon. This is really the next big technology. I love my R200, but the disc's are just too fragile. I picked up one I printed today, and my thumb was wet from holding a coke bottle. Now the text where I touched the disc is smeared.

The DVD media will follow shortly, and they'll possibly be 2nd gen disc's. Which HP claims will print 2X+ as fast. I could go for a 12 minute label.

You also need a special software writing suite to create the labels. Nero is suppost to be offering support for it sometime soon.

The latest Nero does, but it requires a special serial # from Ahead, not sure if it's free? I use Surething, great labeling software, lacks a few options I'd like to see, but I haven't found them in any other software either.

Now I just gotta wait for B&M stores to start actually having the media in stock, I used the 1 Lightscribe disc that came with the drive the first night and am itching to make more.

QueBert, how did you get it to work? I have the same issue.

Thanks man
sd

I have no idea, it works sometimes, then it'll stop. it'd give me some crap message about it can't communicate with the device and tell me I needed to reboot. was frustrating.

now the other day it asked me if I wanted to auto update the firmware, I did, and now the drive doesn't work. Windows is still seeing the drive, but it won't open. Isn't that lovely? haha oh well...

I got mine to work man!!

I found a file on the Surething site that installs just the Lightscribe drivers and viola, Surething works, Nero works. The idea of burning on a disc is brillant in my opinion.

Send me your email and I'll send you the file.

Peace

the file won't do me any good, I had the surething LS driver, and like I said it worked when it wanted too. the drive seems to be dead so I'll be RMA'ing it *siiigh*

i just purchased the HP DVD640i lightscribe drive today and installed it but had to take it back. I tried to install the software that came with it but it had an error, called tech support they had to get a level 2 tech on the phone then they had to call me back an hour later. My problem wasn't that the drive was dead or anything but that the lightscribe software is not compatable with windows xp 64-bit yet. When I asked when it would be they told me after the public release of Windows 64-bit. So after all that i took the drive back and i wasn't very happy i have been looking forward to getting one since I first heard about them back around christmas.

Any examples of the finished product? I'm kind of curious as to how they turn out.

I'll scan one if I can get it to look decent, I have seen some pretty sweet examples but for some reson the ones I do come out looking shotty. I'd be interested in seeing other examples from people on here.

got a new drive from HP, it Lightscribes every time now, only thing is the labels are totally FUBAR looking. I hate HP and I hate Lightscribe 🙂
