Cant get my AMD 1700+ to boot Win2k past 1100mhz!

I have a 1700+ AMD XP chip with an ABIT KG7 mobo, 512 MB crucial ram, IMB hd, creative labs anilator 32mb ddr, SB x-gamer.... what gives?

If I load the fail safe defaults, it runs fine at 1100, but as soon as I move it to normal, 1466, it wont start to load windows. As soon as it says, "PCI device listing" it just locks up.

Anyone have any ideas?

What kind of power supply do you have???
Is it AMD approved??
I have used my Athlon 1.33ghz 512meg SDRAM with WinXP for months now.
No problems.

When I hear people have problems like this, the first thing I think is power supply.
Does it work fine with Win 98 or ME???

Are you increasing the FSB correctly?
With Abit's SoftMenu there are 2 ways to increase the FSB.
The correct way changes the dividers on the PCI and AGP so they stay at 33 and 66 MHz.
The other way increases the FSB without changing the dividers for the PCI and AGP, this one is used to overclock and it usually increases 1MHz at a time.

I am using an Antec 400w power supply that is AMD approved.

I have the FSB settings set to the normal, default settings and I am not even upping them. Maybe It will load if I start overclocking?!

Any other ideas?

Well, Ive been playing and I have some news. I upped the core voltage from default (1.75 I think) to 1.825. I was able to load windows fully, but as soon as I tried to get on the net, it locked up. Time after time.... I moved the voltage up in .25 increments untill I got to 1.825 and each time it helped. I am getting worried though.

How much voltage is too much? What kind of sigh is this? Why do I have to up the voltage from default just to boot?

Okay man.. you are running your CPU at
11 x 100
it's supposed to be running at 11 x 133
You're doing something wrong. Don't up the voltage, you SHOULD NOT HAVE TO UP THE VOLTAGE to run STOCK!!!
Pederv might be right, take a look at your BIOS FSB settings again.. take a look at the jumpers.
If all of that is okay then it might be your RAM .. just a though, because it might run okay at 100 but not at 133..
Make sure you know what you're doing.

I guess those of us with less than 2000 posts dont know what we are doing.

I enter the bios, hit "set OPTIMIZED defaults"... and it puts me at 1100mhz when I boot up. When I TRY and FORCE it at 11x133....It wont load! I dont touch anything else! I dont touch the FSB.... Should it not load when I set it to optimum defaults? Right?

how many sticks of ram are you using? and.. what type of ram? unbuffered/non parity? pc1600? pc2100? etc

So you're going in the BIOS, to the SoftMenu III option where you have the CPU setup screen. You're setting the CPU Operating Speed to 1466 (133), right? Or are you setting the CPU Operating Speed to User Select and then setting the Multiplier and FSB?
Have you tried resetting the CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard? My Abit KT7-RAID acted a little quirky until I reset the CMOS.

Hey MUSTANG347

I'm facing more or less the same problem. I got an AthlonXP1600+ which I want to use in my EPOX 8KTA3 mobo. At 10.5 x 100MHz everything works fine. But when I change the FSB setting to 133MHz I get lockups every now and then, sometimes the thing won't even POST! I figured I might have broke the mobo (wasn't too gentle when I inserted the CPU...). But reading about your problem I think it might be a general problem.
I got an ENERMAX 350Watts (AMD certified), good RAM (Infineon), and took out most everything else to track down the cause.

Does your mainboard ABIT KG7 have the VIA KT133A chipset as well?

Cheers

No. Its a AMD 761 chipset supporting DDR on the north bridge & a VIA south bridge mobo.

Pederv,
Yes, I am going into Soft Menu III and I have tried it both ways. I have set it to 1700+ (133) mode, then also to user select mode to get 1466. No dice. I have also used the jumper a few times to reset the CMOS to no avail.

I am running out of ideas. Thanks for the help tho... any more suggestinos? Is there any thing else in the BIOS that I have missed? I dont think I should have to adjust anything for it to run... Just set to "optimised defaults" and that should be good enough, but it sets it to 1100... :(

Have you got the latest bios, anything over the 5E bios for the KG7 has full Athlon4 support. If not get it and update the bios.

Apart from that it sound like it might be a heat issue, make sure you have the heatsink on properly with only a small amount of Artic silverII heat compound.

Cheak and see what your CPU temps are in the bios, if they are high at 1100MHz, say 30 - 35 degrees C or above, then i'd say cheak the heatsink.

Try one stick of memory at a time, maybe one of the sticks can't handle 133MHz(266DDR).
I don't suppose you have an Athlon-C laying around? Drop that in and see if it works, that would eliminate the processor as the problem.

I am trying the BIOS thing again. I did it before, but it did not work. I may have gotten the wrong one. I am DL'ing the "KG75W.EXE". Its the latest one. Its one above the 5E.

Hope this works!!

WElp, I just got the latest bios, the 5W dated 10/22/01. No change. Still wont even look at the floppy drive before windows loads.

I guess I will take the heat sink off, clean off old artic silver, reapply and try it again.

How long have you had this processor? Has it worked at all in any other OS? I have had problems with Athlons doing the same as yours, and unfortunately in all cases, the processor was improperly installed which resulted in a cracked processor. It sounds as if you have tried all of the other possibities to no avail, maybe you have a friend that would allow you to try your processor in their machine. Best of Luck
