i was defragmenting my d: drive (winxp) when the program froze. i was closing internet explorer at the time of the freeze. i waited and waited for something to happen and when nothing did i hit ctrl-alt-del. nothing happened then either so i hit the reset button. now i cannot boot into winxp. it just stays at the "loading windows" black screen forever. the blue progress bar is moving, but it has stayed there for over ten minutes without loading windows.

i can boot into my c: partition just fine. when i opened up the defrag program and looked at the winxp partition i could see that some system files had been moved off of the "unmovable" block. i tried to defrag and the program froze.

any ideas on how to fix this?

There is a knowledge base article about not being able to boot after doing a defrag in XP... don't recall the keyword I used to find it before though.. wasn't defrag or defragmenter.

Have you tried to boot into safe mode?
Last known good configuration?

If those don't work then run a checkdisk from repair console.

it turns out that i can boot into windows, but everything runs in super slo-mo. to give you some idea of how slow, i right-clicked on the desktop and it took seven minutes before the contextual menu popped up. i'll poke around for that article. i tried to find the "repair install" on the winxp cd but didn't see it. where is it?

i gave up fiddling with it since it took an hour to open any program and then another hour to bring up a menu in that program and then another hour after that to do something else, etc. i reformatted it and am now cruising happily along again. oh well, i didn't lose any data thanks to the partition with win2k plus it had been about a year since i created that install so i don't feel too bad. thanks for the help though.
