Can't get into on-line multi-player games

I have tried on numerous occasions to get into multi-player on-line games. I just don't get it. You run around shooting people for a minute, get killed then do it again and again and again. Am I missing something? Is there something I need to do different to enjoy the experience?
I have tried half-life and RTCW. I found MS combat flight simulator to be marginally interesting, but even that I only played about 5 times and haven't played for months. I find single player FPS much more interesting.

playing against a computer is only one-dimensional and can get boring very quickly.
the computer's AI is usually lacking too.
so we go to mutliplayer games against REAL people...now you have to actually outhink and outplay your opponent with skill.

Yea, isn't it great?

Seriously, it's not for everyone, but the idea is to get on a team, and play like a team. Follow, and back-up someone, and they'll usually watch your back as well. Sometimes it takes an hour or so for the two teams to develop as people come and go from the server, and the trully interested players stay. You learn your team mates and your enemies habits/skills.

if you have halflife, try TeamFortress Classsic or Couterstrike. Counter-Strike requires a dload

They both have more of a teambased gameplay. As with most online games, the game is only as good as the people you play with....

Online gaming is really all about teamwork(depending on the game) and having fun,however you do get cheaters that spoil the game so it`s best to find a good server where they vote cheaters off,you don`t have to be a great player infact having players of different standards makes it more interesting.

Some games like CS,UT,Q3 are more fun online and make a change from single player gaming.
