I have a Linksys BEFSR41 router, and I recently bought a 4-port switch so I could connect more users. I thought that all I needed to do was to connect the switch's uplink port to a port on the router, and the extra users onto the switch. This isn't working. Am I making a nobive mistake?

Yes you are indeed making a noobie fault :)

Don't connect it to the uplink port as that is used for inter-switch connections.. Although it would work if you used a crossed over cable..

Just plug your normal ethernet cable into one of the switchports and off you go..

Agreed. Everytime I tried to use the uplink port on my Linksys router I lost connection to every computer.

Uplink port and a straight-through jumper, or cross-over jumper to a "normal" port.

Also, the uplink port may share a transceiver with a "normal" port, so stay away from the nearest "normal" port (i.e., use one or the other, not both).

FWIW

Thanks for the help. I learned after posting this that another user on the same switch is functionally normally, whereas when I posted this I thought he was still down with a virus. So now I know it is not an issue with the switch- there's something wrong with the configuration on W2K. Can anyone share some ideas on what I might be doing wrong? What is the proper way to configure a PC for network use in W2K?

You don't have to configure anything if you turn DHCP on and set them to just "Get IP Automatically"

Are all computers using the same protocol?
I share file and print services with NetBeui.
And use TCP/IP for internet only. You can use TCP/IP for everything. I have an different versions of Windows (95,98,2K,XP) 95 and 98 seem to like NetBeui better.:)
