Can't get full functionallity out of the official detonator 6.31 drivers on Geforce 2 MX

Just installed Detonator 6.31 drivers, and although the system is stable, if I go to display > and then click on the advanced tab, I get the folloiwing error message:

An error occurred while Windows was working with the control panel file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DESK.CPL

What does this mean, and how do I get by it? I can change the adapter via the device manager, or booting into Safe Mode, but can't change any of the advanced settings.

I get this problem with all Detonator 6.xx drivers, but not with 5.xx

try making a clean install of the drivers:
uninstall via the Control Panel|Software tab and install the drivers again

if problem still exists then something is interfering with the nvidia advanced settings which are usually hooked up to the desk.cpl. search for software that interferes with the desk.cpl, maybe Dr. Watson (drwatson.exe) can help. Try also disabling all unneccessary autostart programs when installing the drivers...

I did a clean install, but still no joy. The only autostart program have is Waterfall.

maybe it's just a problem with the Detonator 6.31, try 6.34 you can get them here Det 6.34 download will start immediately! the 6.34 drivers are used by many other GF2MX manufacturers like Creative or ELSA as official drivers (no beta). They are tested and some bugs from the 6.31 were solved. I hope this helps! I'm using them, too 🙂 GrandPrix3 didn't run properly with the 6.31 Det. so I installed the 6.34 and problems went away. Using them since a week without a problem.
 
I had the same problem going from the hercules drivers to Nvidia's reference drivers. It turned out I missed ridding me of some old files. This is the solution I got from someone on this board (sorry don't remember his name)

"Go to Add/Remove programs and try to uninstall the drivers from there.
2.Run Regedit and click HKEY LOCAL MACHINE and then SOFTWARE.
Delete the Nvidia Corporation key and exit regedit.
3.Reboot and start in safe mode (by holding F8 right before the
Windows logo).
Go to Start / Find / Find Files or Folders and look for these files:
C:\Windows\System: nv*.*
C:\Windows\Inf: nv*.inf
C:\Windows\Inf\Other: nv*.inf
4.Right click your desktop,choose properties and click Settings - Advanced Properties - Adapter.
Click Change and Show all devices.In the left window choose standard display types. In the right choose Standard Display
Adapter ( VGA) and click ok.
5. Now reboot again and now install your new drivers and after reboot run 'coolbits'.
Now you should be able to overclock your card.

I found the 6.47 drivers were the best with my GF2 MX. The 6.31 drivers gave me the disappearing Start Menu problem.
