Can't get beyond 2.2GHz with XP 2500+

For some reason I cannot remain stable with this Barton 2500+ when above 2.2GHz give or take 50MHz or so...let me put it this way...2.3GHz is an impossibility as far as I am concerned...

I have gone into Windows at 2.5GHz with this CPU but it is totally unstable...here is a brief summary of my system's relevant overclocking pieces...

Cooler Master Praetorian
EPoX 8RDA3+ (Lastest Revision)
Barton 2500+ (Don't know the stepping but I ordered it on 4/7/03)
Thermalright SP-97 w/ 80mm Vantec Tornado & Arctic Silver 5
Thermaltake Silent PurePower 480W PSU
512MB Kingston HyperX PC4000

Now the temperatures are great...I am running at 220x10 right now and I idle at 35C and never reach 40C with a full load...I have tried 200x12, 200x12.5, 210x11...you name it, I have tried it...I refuse to dip below 200FSB but I have tried everything possible above 200...my current voltage is 1.85v and the memory voltage is 2.77v...I haven't touched the VDD and I really do not want to...

220x10 runs rather nice...but it is just frustrating...I typically get memory dumps when I become unstable or it just restarts all by itself...my memory timings are at 3-4-4-8 but I have tried more aggresive timings also...my system won't even boot up when I pump the FSB up to 225 or higher...any ideas at all...I am just curious...

That's as far as your chip will go, that's unfortunate given your elaborate cooling, but oh well.

Turn the voltage down on that chip too, if you want to keep it long. It might do 200x10 on stock voltage.

I'd knock the voltage down to 1.75V. Most desktop 2500s will only hit 2.2 (mine included).

Yeah, my 8RDA3+ is the same way. It'll only do 219fsb. Oh well, sell that proc. and buy yourself a mobile Barton. You should have no problems selling it, since it will do 2.2ghz.

I have kept the voltage up this high for a while...I mean, the chip is almost a year old, so I don't care if I kill it...
XP CPUs are so cheap now I consider them like DVD Players or VCRs...

Besides, if I want to do 220FSB the voltage has to be this high...it's weird though...I have it set at 1.85v but EPoX's Diagnostic Manager and a slew of other programs only display the voltage at 1.792-1.808...oh well...

You board overvolts, that's normal. Many boards do that, many also undervolt. That 1.792-1.808 is your true voltage and what you should go by.

I'm also a firm believer that many XP2500+ can't even do XP3200+ and remain my definition of stable. If you want more and think chips are cheap, buy a mobile XP2500+.

That's about average. I have mine at 2.3ghz stable in prime 95 for 24hrs... can boot into windows at 2.4ghz but prime fails after a few min. This is at 1.725v

Ditto here; can be stable @ 11.5x200 and that's the most bang for my buck unless I'm willing to go to 1.9 vcore on my unlocked barton which I'm unwilling to do. And at 11.5 multi, I can't go over 200. I like to think my memory is holding me up but it's ch-5 windbond chips on loose timings, I have a motherboard that's gone 210 no problem, some combo's can't be pushed.

One thing - run it awhile and then try again. I always gain that extra 0.5 multi that way. Swear I don't know why though! I don't think burnin is a factor there.

Anywho, I am the same with my 2500+ and this 1700+ I am playing with right now in my main rig. No matter what I do, 2.34 is my 2500+'s max(11x213) but I usually run it at 10.5x219 due to the higher clocked ram.
Now this 1700+ is very interesting......it can do 11.5x200 @ 1.6 vcore 24 hr prime stable, etc... but getting past 2.3 is pretty rough....right now I am at 2.34 (11x213) I believe, priming but geez....where is my 2.5?!? Still testing this thing, but I will be lucky if I can hit 2.4 at this stage.

A long shot but did you try upping the Vagp a notch? to 1.6V, it helps when FSB ocing (it may upp the Vchip)
Running here a 2500 at 220x10.5 Vc=1.725V on a7n8x-dx bios 1007

you may want to downgrade your bios coz older ones are kinda better for ocing.
