Can't get Athlon XP 1700 to work at 1700

... or anything close.

It doesn't want to work with a FSB of 133mhz set. The machine posts and starts to load Windows 2000, getting right up to the point where Windows would normally start and the gui would kick in, but instead it reboots. Interestingly, it also does this if I try and reinstall it (auto-boot from cd). It loads all of the setup files then reboots when I select repair or install.

I have reinstalled whilst running with a fsb of 100mhz. Problem returns when I change the fsb back.

The memory has checked out fine on a similar setup. Everything is firmly in place. CPU temperature averages 30 degrees c.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hardware:

AMD Athlon XP 1700
Abit KG7
AGP Geforce 1

Are you using an 11 x ( I think this is what 1700 xp uses) multiplier? I wouldn't think an incorrect multiplier would allow the 100 fsb to work though. Can you manually set the fsb to 133 or something between 100 and 133 and get it to work? Is there an automatic setting instead of manual setting for 133 fsb? Also, check your clock settings on the PCI bus. You may be running something too far out of spec unless your system changes your dividers for the PCI bus.

Remember Athlon XP 1700+ runs at around 1.47GHz not 1.7GHz.

You should be using 11 x 133MHz.

Sorry if you knew that already, but it can't hurt to make sure.

Thanks for the tips.

I've been experimenting setting the fsb speed manually, and I can get 110 working perfectly, and 115 working more or less ok. Multiplier is 11. 1265mhz is the maximum I've managed to achieve with any kind of stability. I should be able to do 1466 odd.

This is really stumping me. I don't have the means to test the chip, but as it is running at an ok temperature, and it's ok *until* windows boots, I'm assuming that's fine.

Oh, I've also tried a GeForce 2. Same thing. I've also taken out my SCSI card. Same.

So... :)

Have you double checked the PCI and AGP clock dividers? These keep the buses running at or near spec while overclocking. If they are set to be in spec at 100 fsb, they would be enough out of spec at 115 to maybe cause problems. 133 would definately be too far out of spec for many devices.

i might know what the problem is. my xp1800 wouldnt run either. turned out i had the divider set to 3:3:1 instead of 4:4:1 because 3:3:1 was the default setting. i also have the kg7 raid, so you might be experiencing the same thing. good luck

In able to get Windows to boot I need to set the divider to 3:3:1, multiplyer to 11 and clock to 100. Like I mentioned above I can get around 110 to work ok.

I can't get 4:4:1 to work at all.

Also, I'm not attempting to overclock anything. I have an xp 1700, and just want it to work at it's correct speed.

I've tested the memory again. It is (apparently) capable of running at 140. The CPU reckons it is capable of 1466mhz (athlon xp 1700).

Hmm. Any ideas?

Try this in your BIOS:

Choose Advanced Chipset Features
Then Chipset Driving Control
Next Control CPU P/N Value (Change this to Manual)
Now change the SlewRate Control to a value of 6 or 7.

I made this change to get my XP 1600+ to work on my KG7.
