Can't force DMA on a new Maxtor 160GB drive :(

I bought a Maxtor 160GB drive today at Fry's. I downloaded the "Big Drive Enabler" from Maxtor and ran it to update the registry (running XP Pro, SP1). Then I used MaxBlast to format and partition the drive into a single large partition.

No matter what I try, Windows refuses to enable DMA for this drive. I have it slaved to a Maxtor 45GB which is using Ultra DMA Mode 5 according to Device Mgr.

Tried deleting my primary IDE channel hoping that would fix the problem, but no luck. My new HD still runs at PIO even though "DMA if available" is selected.

Help! 🙂

I'm running:
K7S5A Pro & AMD XP 2000+
XP Pro w/ SP1

Thanks!

i just had this problem and what you have to do is actually plug in different drive (that runs in dma) into the one where its running in pio. this way itll redect a new different drive and set to dma. then unplug that one and put back in the drive you really want and itll redect that one too. you can't simply delete the entry in device manager, which is what i was doing at first too.
