I went to, Lite On and downloaded the LTR-48125W firmware.

The problem comes in when i unzip it and try and flash my 40125S to the new 48x...

This is the message i get,

Can't find LTR 48125W firmware : VSo1-Vs2z drive

This flash utility only supports 48125 firmware..

Am i missing something here?

TIA

You can not flash your 40 X CDom with utility for 48X. Download the appropiate one and you will be able to do it.

you do not just download the firmware for the 48x drive to upgrade your 40x. you have to find a special firmware for it (not sure of the site, do a search on this forum or off-topic on this subject, and they can probably list it). lite-on does not have it on their site because i'm pretty sure doing is against the terms of use or something.

I've got a Pacific Digital 24x10x40x which I know is a LiteOn. Is this the same as the LiteOn LTR-24102 or LTR-24103 and if so, can I flash it to 32x?

to my knowledge, only lite-on 32x and 40x drives can be flashed to 48x. as far as 24x to 32x i've no clue, but im pretty sure you cant.

Help!

These are the options available, but how do you know which one to pick? They don't say on the site what these different file names correspond to:

ZSxx to VS02
ZSxx to VS04
ZSxx to VS06

I have the Memorex 40MAXX drive which is the Lite-On 40/12/48 drive. I have no idea which of these files to pick.

Slickone,

Check out this link for your 24x Liteon flash info:

ClubCDFreaks

It looks to me like ........ if you have the LTR-24103S then you can flash-up to LTR-32123S ............. otherwise you are SOL .....
(as I am with my LTR-24102B).

40X - 48X, is it possible? I am very new here, this is the first time i ever heard of "overclocking" a CDR drive. Are there any negatives to "overclocking" the drives? (ie Overclock CPU making the CPU's life span shorter...)

I have a Liteon LTR-40125W .... should I just use the same link as above to Flash it? At ClubCdFreaks it has been verified to go upto 48x.

I also dont understand the difference between these:

Available firmware updaters for 40125S->48125W conversion:

ZSxx to VS02
ZSxx to VS04
ZSxx to VS06

What is VS02 compared to VS04?

Thanks

Yeah I would like to know also seeing that I have a LTR-40125W drive as well. That's all I need is to flash the wrong firmware update and end up with a nice $70.00 paperweight.

No. When the company produced the CDRW. They made the same CDRW but give it firmware (software) to make it run at a different speed. So essentially it's the same cdrw but the different speeds allow the company to price it to compete in different sectors of the market. By upgrading a 32x cdrw to 48x, doesn't shorten the lifespan of your cdrw anymore than buying a 48x cdrw. hope that helps

Thanks Xenon14 for the answer about the life of the cdrw.

What about the quoted question above? Anyone has an answer?

Thanks

Hi all,
I just upgraded the firmware on my Verbatim 40X, which is a lite-on 40x OEM, to 48x. Basically, the difference between the V02, V02, V04, etc.. is the firmware version. The newest one is V06 but the moderator of the cdfreaks.com forum, prefers V02 because he claims that firmware produces the least amount of errors on the CD. I chose V06 just because the latest and have no problems with it.

Anyone using VS06 that has problems?
Mine came w/ VS04 firmware. Should I flash to VS06? Or, maybe to VS02 since the mod at cdfreaks.com says VS02 has the least problems?

How much actual time does one save in burning at 48x as opposed to 40x? Like 15 seconds on a full disk? And what are the potential hazards of doing the flash? I'd imagine probably trashing your drive. Sure they're cheap but is it really worth it for a few seconds? (PS - I overclock everything...just not my burner...yet.)
