I remember seeing a pic of one that had red sticking out on the front bumper... weren't they all painted and then covered with steel panels? Or am I thinking of something else...

Deloreans body panels were stainless steel. I'm guessing that there are several out there that have been painted because the panels were difficult at best to repair after a collision. You had several choice after a wreck:

1. Find another undamaged stainless panel to replace it. Good Luck!
2. Repair per traditional methods and paint the car.

This particular car owner probably faced this dilemma and opted for choice # 2.

Aside from the body damage repainting, some were repainted so owners didn't have to deal with fingerprints on the SS...

I don't know about a red delorian, but I saw my first one in person over the weekend. Driving home, near my house. There it was, someone else driving a delorian. Never thought I would actually see one of these in person being driven. But there it was.

Those cars are pretty small height wise.

That would be a cool car to have except that it came stock with a the biggest POS V6 to hit the road, the Volvo V6. Yuck.

Actually, I thought it was the Buick v6. I could be wrong, (I don't recall a Volvo V6, only inline 6's) but I swear I remember reading about it at the time they were coming out. John Delorean was a big GM design honcho back in the day. His best known brain child there was the Pontiac GTO in 1964.

EDIT: I stand corrected!

Powerplant and Drivetrain

The powerplant is usually referred to as a PRV6 which is the european version of the Volvo 6-cylinder sports engine. This engine was developed jointly by Peugot, Renault, and Volvo (hence its name). The basic engine is designated as a Volvo B28F and some parts houses can cross reference parts to this engine. The engine designation is probably derived from the engine being a gasoline fueled ("bensin" in Swedish) 2.8 liter engine of generation "F." There are some subtle changes to the engine from the stock configuration usually having to do with the attached systems and slight modifications for the reversed mounting. The engine is mated with the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system which generally has a good reputation.

The transmission is a Renault 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic. The transmission is often referred to as the Renault Alpine and has been modified slightly to accommodate the reversed rear-engine configuration.

Yep, Volvo market a V6 in the late 80's/early 90's. The thing sucked hard so they went to the inline 6. I don't think they had anything more then 4 before that.

There is also a diesel version of the V6 (even bigger POS)
