Well then their cars were total crap. My Corolla turns off if shifted out of park unless the "key" is inside the car.

Which cars in particular allow someone to drive it without the key?

Infinitis still run without the fob.

I can think of two good reasons for them:

1) No more chewed up flywheels and/or starters from hitting "start" when the engine is running.

2) Fewer knee/leg injuries from hitting the ignition column and key(s) during an accident.

IIRC, They had eliminated the first one well before push button starting was around.

I assume the way my car is set up is pretty standard. The fob has a key for opening the door in a dead battery/wireless failure situation, and the button itself pops off and allows for the fob to be inserted and turned like a normal key with close proximity RFID as the detection. It's pretty stable, and if the fob leaves the car while it's running, you aren't putting it in gear.

Being able to just walk to the car, grab the handle, open the door, sit down, push a button and go without ever dealing with pockets is nice.

Yeah, there's a basic plain key hidden inside the fob with my Jeep too, to let you get in if everything fails.

I always thought if I got car jacked, I'd give them the useless key and run...

I'm sure our vehicles have the exact same system.

Why would you give the key? You get out, and leave it running, the assumption is the key is still in the car?

Better hope you can run fast!

Shut it off, and maybe he will think he can take the car with the key, but he has a useless key, and I still have my expensive fob.

I have a big car-jacking deterrent; a manual transmission.
