Can't Enable DMA when using Abit KT7

I've had this board running a scsi rig just fine for a couple months. I removed the board, processor and memory, placed them in a different case, hooked up an IBM 15 gxp 7,200 15 Gig, and IDE Rom. The install goes well but upon installing the VIA 4 in 1's (tried 24 through 28's) the machine would start lagging, stalling, pausing really bad when you tried to run any thing or install simple software. After several re formats I've found that dis abling DMA seems to take the stalling out, but there still seems to be some hesitation. The machine just isn't as quick as it normally would be.

Duron 600 oc'ed 970
Abit KT7 non raid
IBM GXP75 15 gig
SB live
128 megs Infineon cas 2 pc133
Voodoo 4500

I have 4 way interleave on and the memory set to cas2 at 133, which ran extremely smooth with my scsi rig. I have other ide rigs around that are similiar so I know its not just a scsi IDE issue in performance.

Any help would be great!

I have the exact same problem and I can't figure out why I can't turn dma on. I have heard some people talking about problems between the KT7 and the 75 GXP's but nothing conclusive? I would appreciate some help with this also.

Seeing alot of these DMA issues in the forums today. Verify the following:
1. In the bios: integrated devices - all IDE channels have UDMA enabled.
2. How does the bios see it: Need to watch the system post to catch this one and you need to be fast. Does the bios see it as PIO or UDMA?

If the bios is seeing your ide devices as PIO Mode 4 devices try an ESCD update, moving your devices around, disconnecting all but one device. If all else fails try flashing your bios to previous versions.
I've seen UDMA devices show up as PIO devices after a bios flash. Wish I could be more exact in my suggestions, but I haven't had enough time to find out why ide devices will be recognized as UDMA one minute then PIO the next.

My fix was to set any CD/DVD/CDRW ROM drives to Pio Mode 4 and the hard drive to UDMA5 (ATA100). That solved the problem for me, and I used the VIA IDE Tool to do that. This is a known issue with a lot of people and I can't believe there is not much in terms of documentation on their site :(...

I'll look further into this issue when I get home, right now I've tried most everything and nothing seems to help or work.
