Can't disconnect USB

I've recently built a 3800 x2 system, running Win2k sp4, and I'm having a strange problem when I connect my Ipod to the system: it works fine, but it won't let me disconnect it. Everytime I try to stop the device, it tells me another application needs its files and so try disconnecting later.

This will happen with no apps running. Any ideas?
 
I run into that sometimes with USB and Firewire drives. As long as it's set up in Device Manager for the drive properties as "optimize for quick removal", I just unplug it whether it lets me gracefully stop it or not.
 
And to do that, get into Device Manager, find the iPod as a device, and right click on it, and select Properties. Then select the POLICIES tab, and check "Optimize for Quick Rrmoval" as opposed to "Performance." That turns write caching on and off. Externals should not use Write Caching. We like to hot plug 'em! 🙂
 
Is that an XP option? I run Win2k and when I went into Device manager for the Ipod, it didn't have a Policies tab.
 
OK - yes it is for XP. W2k is not as user friendly when it comes to peripherals. Do a research in the Help index and look for hardware policies or something to that effect. Also check Microsoft's W2K KB for policies regarding hot pluggable peripherals.

When all else fails, power down the computer and then disconnect the iPod.
 
Thanks for the help, I will investigate. The power down is what I'm trying to avoid, but it is my fall back.
