Celeron 550 is my current cpu together with Abit BE6(only support 700mhz)

I definitely will upgrade to a higher level, go with AMD Thurderbird or Intel Coppermine??
Which CPU , moboard, ram ...
which combination is the best?

yo, thanks.

If you've the dough, get the new DDR capable boards and buy some DDR ram and a TBird 1Ghz.

If you're strapped for cash, consider the old combination in my sig.

Tbirds are faster than coppermines in their current state.

815 Mobo's are about the same cost as Duron mobo's for high performance and feature set.

Intel chipset is more stable, more compatible (esp with other os's).

Nobody will blame your computer if it crashes and has an intel.

(but the same point doesn't work with AMD , you'll get lots of TOLD YOU SO).

I would never buy a AMD product at work. I don't have a single one in my NOC.

Chew on those points.

My sugestion would be to go with a similar setup to what your friends have. That way if you have any problems, there's similar PCs around that you can try. Getting the same MB as someone else can also be a good idea especially if you screw up a BIOS update, then you can do the hot swap BIOS trick and update it in the working machine with a working BIOS.

what!

I have plenty of these at my work...

What sort of work are you doind???

Ok, granted. The AMD mobos are having some driver "issues"...but I highly doubt that you can sacrifice the performance level of the AMD dollar for dollar in a home environment.

Personally, the Intel P2 450 and my Duron 600 crash equally as much. Win98SE is just ppushing too many limits all the time. But lets be realistic here. It is not the fault of Microsoft or AMD or Intel.

BIG SUPRISE === ITS THE FAULT OF ALL THE JACKA$$e$ producing the crappy drivers and poor level of quality hardware and way too extravagant buggy software that people load up on their system and then say: "Hey, why is my computer running so slow, AND hey...Why do I have AOL 3.0, 4.0 AND 5.0 in My c drive!!!"

Um, If people would be smart about the following:

1. Partitioning
2. Memory Quality
3. Hard Drive Quality
4. Software Quality

Then,

1. I wouldnt go ranting about like some flame-on geek machine
2. People wouldnt write rediculous comments about how STABLE intel boards are...
3. People wouldnt suggest components based on things like : What I use at work

enough!

GO, Research, Decide why you need a small supercomputer to browse the web or play Quake 3
