Can't decide what to buy first!!!

IM building my first computer. I will have about a $1300 budget w/out the monitor. I was wondering what should I buy first. Should I get the optical drives first, the hard drive, graphics card, mobo/cpu. I already have an a-top alien case. I will probably have it finished by mid March cuz Im having to save up and I know if I wait the prices will go down (especially the mobo/cpu-3.6 Prescott). Need a little help on the first things to buy!!!!!

What do you have currently that will help to know what needs upgrading the most.

1) If your into gaming go AMD64 they are cheaper and have better performance than a P4

You can save a bit of money and get better performance by going with an Athlon 64. If you want PCIe, wait for that for the CPU, motherboard, and probably graphics card too. I don't see drives or memory changing much in price.

By the way, make sure you get a quality power supply to go with your generic case--you don't want to be trusting $1,300 worth of hardware to a no-name of dubious quality anything, especially not such a PSU.

I have the case and the power supply(x-connect). Are there any advancements in cd-r/w speed or dvd-r/rw speed anytime in the near future that I should wait for?

Probably not. Buying an 8x DL DVD burner is probably as future-proof as you'll get for a while.

I've heard about numerous problems with Ultra X-Connect PSUs; it seems many a poster here has reported losing a fair chunk of hardware because of those units. Stick with brands like Fortron, Enermax, OCZ, or Seasonic.
