I am planning to build a new system soon. I was about to get a 1.2 Tbird with 256mb pc133 ram along with a Abit kt7a.

Then I got offered a great deal for a P4 1.4, with 256mb rambus pc800 (2 128 sticks) and asus p4t for $125 more than my planned tbird combo.

Which one should I get if you are in my shoes?

Tbird...it'll overclock better and Intel is just evil ;). Plus you could use that $125 for more ram or a better version of another component that you were going to buy.

my $00.02 ;)

Although I have AMD system, but I always bit pro-intel.
Yes, I know performance-wise, intel might not be as good as T-bird..but......
there is always a bit of stability problem among AMD......

If I were you, I will take Intel.

If it was me, I'd take it. I'm slowly putting together a multimedia editing workstation, and that's where I'd put the P4. My general purpose workstation would remain an Athlon system, though.

Uh..the 1.2Ghz TBird is probably faster htan the 1.4Ghz P4 in what you will use it for ;)

Actually while I have nothing against the P4 I'd dodge it for now...the next revision P4 will use a different Socket so your current motherboard will be useless...as far as I can tell AMD plans to stick with SocketA for a while, so you'll have a better upgrade path.

But either of them will be super fast systems.

For only $125 I'd go with the P4. You're getting that RDRAM which is nice and the P4 is gonna perform similiarly. Your upgrade path will be limited with the motherboard but lets face it most people on the cutting edge replace their mobo's as often as their chips (though not always at the same time) so I wouldn't worry about it too much. If the difference was greater than $175 though I'd say to go w/ the AMD solution (which in regard to TimeKeeper, I never had a problem with stability on an AMD, Intel, IDT, or Cyrix system that's properly configured, and I've ran them all.).

Thanks so far for the responses guys.

Pretty tough decision huh? I know both are great cpus.
I may use the new system as a server and will run Windows 2000 Server on it if that helps lean toward one of them.

I only play games once in a while, and they are usually EA Sports game.;)

Don't plan to upgrade for at least 1-2 years anyway after this system.

Still stuck.
People are complainting about P4 because of its price. Other than that, is it great chip?

The 266fsb 1.2 Ghz t-bird also looks so tempting too.

no need to get the 266 mhz Tbird. You can just use a regular 200 MHz one, drop the mutiplier and OC the FSB using one of those KT133A motherboards (KT7A is one).
