Can't copy large files from win2k to 98 machine

:disgust:

I have a simple P2P network using a crossover cable...and it works...half way. Each machine has has two network adaptors - one for a direct connection to the cable modem and one for connection to the network. The network was installed by a technician so I know very little about it.

The two machines can 'see' each others shared files and folders and I can copy any sized file from the 98 to the win2k machine but as soon as I try and copy any file type [.txt, .doc, .wav, .mp3] > about 80 Kb from the win2k to the 98 machine I get an error message :

Error Copying File
Cannot copy filename.* : the specified network resource or device is no longer available.

I've been through the tutorials but can't find anything to explain this anomaly. The win2k network configuration =

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol TCP/IP

The network adaptors are:
Realtek RTL 8139 (A) PCI Fast Ethernet Adaptor
Realtek RTL 8139 (A) PCI Fast Ethernet Adaptor #2

The win 98 network configuration =
Client for Microsoft Networks
Compaq Netelligent 10 T PCI UTP Controller
Realtek RTL 8139 (A/B/C8130) PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
TCP/IP -> Compaq Netelligent 10 T PCI UTP Controller
TCP/IP -> Realtek RTL 8139 (A/B/C8130) PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

The network adaptors listed are:
Compaq Netelligent 10 T PCI UTP Controller
Realtek RTL 8139 (A/B/C8130) PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

Don't know if this makes any difference but the win2k machine has an ePox 8K7A motherboard [ AMD 761].

Any thoughts would be appreciated 🙂 Detailed instructions I would kill for 😛
Thanks
Andrea

how are you copying the files?

drag/drop? or copy from the commmand line?

try doing it different ways and see if you get the same results or not

try using copy and xcopy from the command line as well as copy/paste inside the GUI/windows explorer

there are some things in the Win98SE tcp/ip stack and the vredirector that cause some problems during large file transfers, we had a similar problem where i work and brought in a MS engineer. he ended up telling us to stop using win98
