Getting media read error. Is this some form of copy protection, or do I have a bad CD? It installed and seems to run ok off the orig. media.

Dude you will get banned for this one.

wrong place man, this is a legal copy, sure they all start out as a legal copy, either as a friends or a place where you can rent games from. if it is yours and you have it legally, i am sure if you break it you could call up the maker and get a new one, just keep your receipt. plus you are a noob, just looks like piracty to us

Just to prove I'm not trying to pirate anything, here's where it came from:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-122-204&depa=1

And here's a clip of the receipt (personal data xxx-ed out):

Now then, anyone want to take a stab at answering my original question?

Retyping a receipt means nothing. There is no reason for anyone to trust you, thus no reason to believe it is legit. Which is why discussion like this is always locked.

Why? This is a legal copy and I'm entitled to make a backup, no?

Ok, let me get this straight, you want to make a backup copy of the disc for what reason? You've already installed it. Get a "patch" for D3 and put you're CDs safely back into it's case. What's the point of making a "backup?" You aren't going to let a friend "borrow" it are you? If you can't figure out why your "backups" are failing, then you don't deserve a copy.

I ran over a CD once.
It got knocked on the floor, and as I moved my chair (wheeled chair) to pick it up, I managed to run over it.
So I had to buy another copy of the game.

Try BlindWrite or Clone CD.

What happned to innocent until proven guilty? We all know CDs can be damaged and it's worth making backups if you can.

If you can find clone cd, that'll copy it just fine.

Unfortunately, Doom 3 is one of those games that checks to see if you have clone cd installed. The game wont run until you uninstall clone cd.

And to support the above statements:
A newbie asking how to copy a disc looks a lot more guilty than innocent. Do searches first. This issue has been covered. Usually ends with a lock and a one week ban.

well for me..i usually break out the cd from the box once, after installation i iso the cd and never take it out again.

Piracy skyrocketed, that's what happened. 9 out of 10 of the people posting here have done it.

So instead of making a backup copy, you recommend he downloads a game crack?

I make copies of all the CDs I can, then I put the original away in the closet. That way, I can toss the CD in and out of the drive and not worry about scratching it up or running it over with my office chair. Because when something like that happens, the company is always glad to give me a replacement CD...for $20 or so. Thats why I like steam...no CDs, I just log into the account and redownload the software. I don't need to make a backup, they do it for me.

I don't even know why manufactors do this crap...its such a PITA having to put a CD in and out. And pirates just bypass it anyway. Then you've got legit users who don't want to put the CD in the drive, and they start digging around the warez channels to find a way to make the game less annoying.

k, let me get this straight, you want to make a backup copy of the disc for what reason?

The why is irrelevant. There are no legal problem with making a backup of software that he owns.

Next you'll be saying "you want to buy that knife for what reason? Maybe you want to take it outside and kill someone!"
