This problem recently started to occur. I connect to the internet just fine, using my dialup modem. However, if i disconnect, then later try to reconnect, i connect fine, but i'm never able to download any web page, email, etc, unless i reboot my PC.
I'm using Win XP pro
Haven't added any new hardware, or software recently that i can think of. Haven't changed ISP's either.

Any suggestions? I'm searching on google right now...

I am assuming you get some type of error message after you try to connect to the website, can you tell us what is says?

When the internet doesn't work for you, try pinging a server and see if it works. If it doesn't then what error does it show?

I get your standard DNS error page. I've tried pinging anything from a command prompt - can't.

If you area using an internal modem, especially a Winmodem, the buffer gets full and the only way to clear it is rebooting. Actually all you need do is turn off the modem power . . . an external is easy. Internal requires a reboot.

This is almost normal for internal Winmodems.

Yes - i'm aware of that issue. However, this is a new issue. I've been using the same hardware & OS for a long time. This is a new issue. I guess i'll try and round up a different modem and see if that helps.

How reliable are USB modems? I've never used on. Any benefits, problems, etc?

Never found a reliable USB modem. Have tried two, and they became instant shelfware. The most reliable external for the money, IMHO, is Zoom. I don't use dialup except for backup and on the road. My laptop has a so-so Winmodem and I have to reboot to ever achieve a 2nd log on by dialup. It has become a routine procedure. Sometimes it depends on the interface between me and the dialup access number. Hotel switches are notoriously flaky.

At home I have an external Courier V-Everything - they don't make 'em like that any more. :) Never a problem there.
