Well, that's not exactly true. I can connect at 45,333 but no pages will open. I get "The page cannot be displayed". "Cannot find server or DNS error". This happens on all pages. Everything was fine until I ran AdWare to look for adware/spyware. I reinstalled the backup I had made before running it but it didn't help anything. I am also getting "propoxy" (Norton's email anti virus) errors. I uninstalled Norton's and Adware. I then reinstalled Norton's and still get the propoxy error. I reinstalled windows, ran SFC (about 7 dll's missing which I reinstalled) and ran Norton's system check. I uninstalled/reinstalled the com ports and the modem. I am at a loss. Any ideas?

Diamond Supra Express 56K External. AIM, Outlook Express (for Newsgroups) and pinging in a DOS window don't work either.

You say you reinstalled Windows. I assume you installed on top of your current Windows and did not do a format (since you said 7 dll's were missing). Sounds like something in your registry might be causing the problem. I would remove the modem from your system again (go to the modem icon on control panel and click the remove button). then look in Add/remove programs and see if there is an entry for removing the modem drivers (and remove them if there is). Then go into the registry and see if there is an entry for your modem there (i will assume you know your way around the registry, if not let me know). Delete the modem from your registry.

Now reinstall the modem drivers and try again.

Don't know if this will work for you but it won't hurt to try...

I installled Windows on top of itself. I removed the com ports and the modem form device manager but I didn't delete the registry entries. I'll try it.

Go to tools, internet options and click on the connections tab. What settings do you have there?

Under Dial Up Settings, it shows my two ISP's. Under that, the radio box for "Never Dial A Connection" is checked. In the settings panel, nothing is checked. I selected "Dial Whenever A Network Connection Is Not Present" but that made no difference.

I assume when you go to the diagnostics screen for your modem and hit the More Info button you get a good response and it appears that the modem is working properly? Also, when you connect, do you hear the regular modem noises and see the window pop up saying it is verifying your userid and password?

Glad to hear it. I hate when 3rd party software screws up the entire system...

Ya, that sucka bacically takes over Winsock. It acts like a proxy so that everything goes through them so they can get your data.
