I'm trying to help this lady out and she has a DSL connection. The problem is though, its giving her that default IP addres 169.254.190.248 <-- unroutable number.

So she's able to "connect" but she can't view any webpages. I remember coming across this problem before, but didn't pay much attention to it.... so now I have to turn to the pro's.

Any suggestions guys? Thanks!

Is she using a router or is it straight to the modem. Have you tried reconfiguring her setup from scratch.

She's not on a router, its directly connected to the computer.

I'm not physically there, and am helping her over the phone. It is definitely a pain in the arse

I think that she may have a DHCP problem.

Exactly how is she connected?
DSL Modem? USB or NIC? Any hub/switches etc between her system and the ISP?

Actually, I got the problem solved. I used a program called winsockxpfix.exe and it worked miracles for her. Got it up and running for her in no time.
