Can't connect to the Internet!!! *fixed*

Hi there,

Something strange happened to my secondary computer, which is the primary download machine.

I left it running yesterday with BT, since I was downloading some Tiesto live sets.
When I came home at night, I found the machine shut down. I figured that's odd, since 1) nobody touched it and 2) there was no power surge in the house.

I proceeded to burn to CD the stuff I had already finished downloading, then went to sleep.

This morning, to my desperation, I find that it can no longer connect to the internet.


The other computer in the house (from which I'm posting) continues to work, and I still have Internet capabilities (I'm posting from it).

The setup is this: I have DSL service, so the modem is connected to a router, which is connected to the two computers. Simple and elegant.

The computer in question is an Athlon 2500+, with an Abit NFS-7 card (on-board LAN), running W2k SP4.

There were no software changes since August, and everything has worked just fine until last night.

I tried simple things: plugging it into another router port, uninstalling and reinstalling TCP/IP, but nothing works.

What do I do?


*edit* unplugging EVERYTHING and restarting the entire configuration of hardware seems to have solved the issue.

Can you log into your router? With my Linksys router I can log into it and check and change the router's config. If you can do that then you can verify that your computer's networking systems are all working ok. Maybe even better: can you see the other computer that's connected to the router?

Does your router distribute IP addresses by DHCP? If so, perhaps you can release/renew your IP address.

I had the same problem after Ivan went thru our area. I disable the LAN device then re-enabled it. Didn't help. I rebooted the box, still no luck. Then I unplugged the CAT-5 patch cable and looked to see if the connection went down. Then plugged back in. It was fine after that. Weird and Strange, but it worked.

i had a problem like that with my old pc just not connecting to the internet over night. try connecting it directly to the modem. If it works then your networkcard got messed up somehow, probably just from old age.

Thanks for the suggestions.

1) I already tried to unplug the cable from the router and reconnect it.
2) The second computer connected to the same router can access the Internet (as i said, i'm posting from it)
3) The router is a D-Link 604
4) The motherboard is new (bought in March) so I hope old age is not a factor here.

What puzzles me is that I can't figure out if the problem is of a physical nature (i.e. a burned LAN controller on the motherboard) or software-related.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough knowledge of networking to be able to do troubleshooting. For instance, how do i release/renew the IP address?

Ok, it seems I've fixed it...

I unplugged/shut down everything, including the router, modem and secondary computer.

Then I rebooted the modem and the router, followed by the two machines.

They can both connect to the internet, now. Strange.

it happens more often than you think,from time to time I have to reset my linksys router because it's just dead (red light on), after i unplug & plug back on it's good for sometimes days....weeks sometimes it happends twice a day. weird.
