can't connect to internet after xp home fresh install

I just did a fresh install of windows xp home on my desktop. The device manager reports no issues with the ethernet card and with my network cable plugged in the lights on the ethernet card are flashing like they are supposed to. the network cable is connected directly to the modem. when I my laptop to the modem I connect fine. My computer is setup to obtain my IP address automatically from the ISP. I tried using ipconfig to release and renew my IP address but that did not work. I also tried resetting the cable modem with no luck. Windows XP thinks the network card is fine and all it's lights are flashing. any ideas?

You didn't mention a router anywhere. Nor what kind of Cable Modem you have, nor your ISP. All of these can affect your connection.

As JackMDS states on his web site, the easiest-to-work-with setup is hooking a router directly into your Cable Modem (unless the cable modem includes a router....but very few of them do). Then, you hook your various PCs to the router.

If authentication is required by your Cable ISP, you can permanently insert a MAC address and any authentication credentials needed for the connection directly into the router. After that, you can hook up as many PCs as you want to the router without further problems. And the router will give you some firewall functions that can help protect your computers against worms and hackers from the Internet.

HOWEVER, I'm not aware of any Cable ISPs that require authentication or MAC addresses from your PC. But maybe there are some.....

tried just about everything then finally everything worked after installing sp2. not sure what the deal with but everything's up and running now.
